Solo's!
Thank You to everyone who tried out for "Song of Peace" on Thursday. It was such a hard decision but I did choose two main solo's with another at the end:
Andrew will be singing the first two lines
Carmen will sing the third and fourth line
Ethan will sing the last line of the song.
Please practice singing these lines before Tuesdays practice! We will have our own extra practices later in the week.
Way to Go!

Oboe Presentation
The Grade Three students were treated to a wonderful presentation about the Oboe and English Horn first thing Tuesday morning. Mrs.Wright, Ethan's Mom in Grade 3 M/S plays for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra so we were very lucky to have her come in. We were able to see the Oboe and English Horn up close and to see what a double reed looks like. This will help us alot with our "Peter and the Wolf" unit we are currently learning about. One thing I learned in the presentation is that the reason why the English Horn is called what it is because the English horn used to be called the "cor angle" since it had a bent shape. Angle, which is a French word, was mistranslated as anglais, or English. Even with the modern instrument being straight, the translation is still used and the instrument is still known to this day as the English horn. Very Interesting! Thank you Mrs.Wright!

Choir!
What an amazing choir rehearsal yesterday. I am so excited for our first performance. Thank you to everyone who came out, I think we have almost 70 choristers now and the sound was unbelievable! I would like to remind everyone to ask their parents about buying choir shirts this weekend. Remember that you do not have to buy one but I ask at performances that you where a long sleeved black shirt/dress. If you did not get a notice to take home with the information on it come and see Mrs.Dueck before the weekend. I have attached a Utube video of "A Song of Peace" that we will be singing at the Remembrance Day Assembly November 10 at 11:00 am. For some reason it starts off with a nice picture and then goes black for the rest of the video and for some added fun they sing the alphabet song at the end????.....all I really wanted was the recording of "Song of Peace" so don't worry about the rest. See you Next Friday for our next rehearsal!

Thank you so much to those that have signed up for choir this year. I still would love even more students. The more the merrier!! We are going to have so much fun singing and performing this year. It is a great opportunity to meet students in other grades and classes and become a better musician at the same time. The first rehearsal will be Wednesday October 6th Day 4 and will continue every Day 4 after that. We will be performing at the Remembrance Day Assembly on November 10th so let your parents know.

Welcome Bach!
Hi Everyone! Welcome back to school! I am very excited for another great year in the music room. It will be so great to see everyone and hear about your adventures over the summer. Remember that there will be a sign up for Grade 3-5 Choir around the 2nd week of school as well as a letter going home with Grade 4 students letting you know about Recorders! Yay! The title of this blog post is Welcome Bach (did you notice?). Did you know that the famous composer Johann Sebastion Bach had 20 children! When did he have time to compose all that amazing music!!

Thank you for practicing so hard to make this such a great evening. I absolutely loved the story/play put on by 5/6F and Mrs. Finlay as well. We are so proud of you guys for raising over $1650 for Winnipeg Harvest.

Yodeling
The Grade Three students have learned a song called "The Austrian Went Yodeling" which has given us a look into this interesting way of singing. It is quite fun actually and the kids sound great when they are singing it. In the song we learned the concept of the "fermata" and that it means to hold a note longer than it's value. We also watched a fun video of a young girl yodeling and the students asked if I could put it on the blog. Here it is!

"Sing, Sing"
Thank you to everyone who made Music Monday a success. We had a blast performing "Sing Sing" as well as Viva La Vida, I Gotta Feelin' and the School Song! The weather made us come inside but the sound we got from our whole school singing was unbelievable in the gym. It was great to see so many parents out to see us celebrate Music in our schools! Be sure to check out the division website for a picture collage of our event. There is a bunch of different schools featured on the main page so when it gets to ours just hit the stop button so you can look at it. Maybe you will see yourself! http://www.pembinatrails.ca/

Grade 5's at the Symphony
On Wednesday March 24, the Grade 5 students will be heading to the Centennial Concert Hall to see the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. We have been preparing for this concert by learning about the music, instruments and composers that will be featured. Just a reminder to Grade 5 students to get your permission slips and money in ASAP! Also I have asked that you dress appropriately for this concert so we can have the real experience of a Symphony concert!

Congratulations to all students who participated in "Oz"! There are just no words to express how amazing you ALL were. Everyone put on a performance of a lifetime!! I know we will not soon forget these days preparing and performing this musical. You should all feel very proud of the work you have done.
Winnipeg Music Festival
Just looking at the countdown I am getting excited for the music festival coming this Friday March 12th. We will have a practice first thing Friday morning at 9:00 and then head to Westminister United Church. We will listen to other choirs and get some ideas for new repertoire and then at around 11:00 we will perform our new "Wishes" and "Obwisana". Please remember to bring nice shoes, your choir shirts and a lunch to stay at school when we get back. I look forward to a great Choir Party next Tuesday. We have lots to celebrate! Break a leg everyone.

Grade 2 WSO Field Trip
The Grade 2's had a wonderful time at the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra concert. Everyone was so well behaved and looked so nice. We were a little dissapointed they didn't play alot of our favourite piece of music "Symphony Number 5" by Beethoven but the concert was very entertaining and the one hour flew by. What a great selection of music for us to be able to listen to! It was so neat to see all the instruments we learned about as well. Bravo Grade 2's!!
Pembina Trails Sings
Wow!... is all I have to say about the Grade 3-5 performance at Pembina Trails Sings last week. I thought the choir gave their best performance and the adjudicator gave us some fantastic tips to take back to our rehearsal to get ready for the Winnipeg Music Festival on Friday March 12. We are doing a great job of learning our new "wishes" song and I know it will be ready to go next Friday. Please remember to bring in your permission forms. Thanks to all who came to listen to us perform. We really appreciate it!

Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra
The Grade 2's are very excited to see the WSO on Tuesday March 2nd. We have learned about all the music and composers and have even started to get to know the instruments of the orchestra very well. Our concert was cancelled in January due to weather so it was tremendous news to us that our concert was rescheduled. All Grade 2 students are reminded to wear some nice clothes for this event as this will make our experience all the more authentic. Thank you to parents who have bought tickets for the balcony so you can enjoy the music your child has been learning about. Bravo!!

Tacky the Penguin
The Grade One's performed "Tacky the Penguin" for the Kindergarten's at the end of January. Tacky the Penguin is a story about a penguin who is "different" than his friends. In the story we learned that "Tacky is an odd bird but a nice bird to have around." The students of Linden Meadows School have been performing this for many years and have all loved using instruments to tell this wonderful story.
