On With the Snow and Olympic Opening Ceremonies

I would like to thank everyone involved with making our Holiday Concerts a huge success last night! The kids worked so hard and our audience was just the best. So many people contributed to allowing our students to shine and I can tell you the students will have memories to last them a lifetime. Bravo!! The first video is of the K-2 concert and the second is of the Grade 3-5 concert.

Seussical!!

Today is the day we start Seussical auditions! I found this awesome video of another schools production and thought I would share in case you would like to watch the musical at home. Its not as well known as some musicals so this might be something you would like to be able to get to know the lovable characters.

We started a song called "I Ask for One Day" that we will be performing at the Remembrance Day service in November. The students wanted to practice along with the recording so here it is.

Welcome Back to School

Welcome Back Everyone! I am so excited to be back and ready to sing, dance, play and create with our most amazing students! We have so much to look forward to and with a growth mindset we will do that together and make this the best year ever! Choir, Musicals, Assemblies, Festivals, Concerts will all be a part of this year and there will be something for everyone. Being involved and creating together is the best way to learn!! Make sure to come by and say hello at our Meet the Teacher BBQ on Sept. 13th. We have a new teacher candidate here named Ana Schujman who wants to meet everyone as well. This picture is taken from my view of the flag raising and singing of "O Canada" on the first day of school. What an amazing tradition it is!

Opera in a Box - Hansel and Gretel

This week a mysterious chest arrived from Manitoba Opera with a whole bunch of props from the Opera "Hansel and Gretel". The Grade 2's have been learning about Opera and the story of Hansel and Gretel. It has been a lot of fun so far "wondering" what was in the chest and how it all fit together. We enjoyed using a website with an interactive game telling the story of this Opera and here is the link for the students to play at home or during free time on the computers at school. http://classicalkusc.org/kids/opera/index.htm

Music Monday is on Monday May 1st this year and will feature this all Canadian Song. I have attached the official video and a lyric video below. The second song is "Canada Is". This is one that all students will be singing at the Investors Group event on May 24th. Practice makes progress. Feel free to sing at home!!

Winnipeg Music Festival

Congratulations to the Grade 3-5 Choir on their Gold award winning performance at the Winnipeg Music Festival. Last week they were invited to sing at the Choral Excellence Program at Westminster United Church with other amazing choirs in the city and they did so well! Mrs. Dueck would like to thank each and every choir student for coming to choir rehearsals even if there was intramurals or a sunny day outside. Your hard work showed in your performance!!

Grade 5 Artwork

In preparation for our field trip to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra we listened to all of the music that will be performed. For one of the pieces, "Contented House" by Jean Coulthard, we used watercolour pencil crayons and water to create artwork to go with the music. Some drew concrete objects and some used colour and line to show what they felt and saw in their mind when listening to the music. I just loved watching them listen while drawing and their finished projects are beautiful. First video is 5AG, second is 5G and third is 5N.

SING!!

The Grade Four students have been learning about the A Capella group "Pentatonix". Some things we have learned are what A Capella means, how their group became famous, what a Basso Profundo is, a cover song, and what beatboxing is. We have been learning the song "SING", an original composition by the four members of the group. Here is the choreography video to practice at home!

Linden Meadows Choirs

The Linden Meadows Choirs have been working very hard in January! The Grade 3-5 Choir is preparing to perform at the Winnipeg Music Festival on March 1st in the morning. They are singing two pieces "Mother Earth", a North American Indigenous Song and "Four White Horses", a folk song from the Caribbean. Two very different and contrasting pieces of music. The newly formed Grade 5 Symphony Choir made up of 20 students from Linden Meadows and 200 students from our division will be performing with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra on March 15th in the morning. They are part of the Canadian Mosaic concert celebrating Canada 150!! Finally the Grade 2 choir is gaining experience singing choral music to prepare them for next years Grade 3-5 choir. There will be performance opportunities for them coming soon! Stay Tuned!
